Who owns The Historic Park Inn Hotel?
Wright on the Park, Inc. a non-profit organization formed in 2005 owns The Historic Park Inn Hotel in Mason City, Iowa. The properties include the original building that housed law offices, a hotel and a bank designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1909 and opened in 1910. The hotel is managed by HPI Partners, LLC which is based in Mason City and owned by Steven Noto, President of Thompson Companies and CFO of Stoney Creek Hospitality Corp. Wright on the Park will continue to own the buildings in perpetuity and will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and preservation of the hotel.

How was the restoration of The Historic Park Inn Hotel funded?
The $18 million restoration of The Historic Park Inn Hotel & City National Bank building was funded from a variety of public and private funds. They include: Vision Iowa; State & Federal Historic Tax Credits; New Markets Tax Credits; Iowa Great Places, Area foundation grants, Vision Mason City (a community fund); area corporate donations and donations from individuals.

How did Frank Lloyd Wright come to Mason City?
Two prominent Mason City attorneys, J.E.E. Markley and J. Blythe commissioned Wright to build new law offices. Wright added the hotel and bank for purposes of additional revenue. The Historic Park Inn Hotel & City National Bank opened in September 1910. Mr. and Mrs. Markley became familiar with Wright’s work because they sent their two daughters to Hillside School in Spring Green, Wisconsin, operated by Wright’s aunts. Wright had designed a building for the school in 1903. The building impressed Markley which led him to choose Wright as the architect for their new law offices.

How many rooms were in the original hotel?
Originally the hotel had 41 hotel rooms, each 10 feet square, with shared bathrooms between guest rooms, or some bathrooms down the hall. In the restored hotel the original corridor widths have been maintained as have the original outlines of the bathrooms. 21 modern hotel rooms were designed for the new hotel by combining two original rooms into suites. Six more rooms were designed in the former office space of the bank building.

Will there be a bank in the City National Bank building?
The former banking floor of the City National Bank building is now part of the hotel and will serve as a ballroom/banquet hall and conference center. Conference rooms are now available in what was the basement of the bank building. The original law library located in the law offices in the center of the building will also be a conference room.
